Adeje calls Local Security Board meeting to coordinate action on key issues

The occupation of the Hotel Callao Sport, illegal settlements, unauthorised taxis, and street vending were the main matters discussed

mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga

The Adeje Local Security Board met today, Thursday 31 July, to address some of the most urgent security issues in the municipality and to coordinate joint action between the different police forces and government bodies involved.

The main topics discussed were:

  • The illegal occupation of the Hotel Callao Sport
  • Illegal settlements in various parts of the borough
  • Unauthorised taxi activity
  • Street vending without permission

Key attendees

The meeting was chaired by mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and also included:

  • Mercedes Vargas Delgado (Councillor for Security)
  • Jesús Javier Plata Vera (Deputy Representative of the Central Government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
  • Representatives from:
  • Guardia Civil
  • National Police
  • Canarian Police
  • Adeje Local Police

Focus on Hotel Callao Sport

The mayor highlighted that the unauthorised occupation of the Hotel Callao Sport was the primary concern:

“Both the Local Police and the Guardia Civil have maintained a permanent and coordinated 24-hour presence since the issue began. While this is a judicial matter, Adeje Town Hall has acted and will continue to act in every way possible.”

The Local Police have already responded over 160 times to incidents at the property, including:

  • Fights
  • Attempted arson
  • Theft and robbery
  • Gender-based violence

A recent social services inspection of 17 rooms found 24 children and 3 pregnant women living there.
The board agreed to maintain permanent police surveillance and to submit the report to the Directorate General for Minors.
Further inspections on health and safety, planning, and structural conditions will follow.

Illegal Settlements

The board reviewed reports of over 200 substandard dwellings, some in dangerous conditions, and others allegedly being rented out to tourists via online platforms. Additional concerns included:

  • Illegal dumping
  • Loose animals
  • Protected wildlife
  • Suspected informal land sales

The board will request urgent action from the Canary Islands environmental agency.

Unauthorised Taxis

Organised groups are operating illegal taxis, particularly in tourist areas. So far in 2025, the Local Police have filed 41 complaints, many involving repeat offenders.

The Guardia Civil and Local Police will intensify their cooperation to address this issue, which poses a risk to passengers and damages the legal taxi sector.

Unlicensed Street Vending

The Local Police have carried out 28 interventions this year, seizing counterfeit and abandoned goods.

The National Police have offered to work with Local Police to control this activity, especially as Adeje’s new beach patrol unit becomes operational.

Final remarks

Mercedes Vargas Delgado, councillor for security, summarised the agreed actions:

“We’ve agreed a number of action points for the coming months focusing on four main areas:

  • The situation at Callao Sport
  • Illegal settlements
  • Unauthorised taxi activity
  • Unlicensed street vending”

She confirmed joint efforts will continue between local and regional forces to protect residents, ensure lawful transport, and tackle environmental and heritage threats.
