Adeje’s “Mi Abuelo Solidario” Returns to Ensure No Child Goes Without a Gift This Three Kings’ Day

The long-running solidarity initiative once again brings together seniors, families and local organisations to support children facing financial hardship during the festive season.

Adeje Town Hall has once again launched “Mi Abuelo Solidario”, a solidarity initiative designed to help Their Majesties the Three Kings ensure that every child in the municipality receives a gift on one of the most magical nights of the year.

Now in its ninth year, the project has been running since 2016 and continues to focus on supporting families experiencing temporary economic difficulties. The initiative is coordinated by Adeje Town Hall’s Department of Seniors and Department of Community Welfare and Social Cohesion, led by councillors Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro and Raquel Rodríguez Alonso, in collaboration with the Adeje Senior Citizens’ Club.

“Unfortunately, many families face economic difficulties, so any support that allows children to receive a gift on Three Kings’ Day is more than important,” explained Rodríguez del Toro. “Especially at this time of year, solidarity matters — because children deserve it.”

How “Mi Abuelo Solidario” Works

The initiative is built around a simple but meaningful exchange:

  • Children living in economically disadvantaged circumstances write letters to the Three Kings
  • These letters are collected by the royal pages
  • Gifts are purchased using funds raised through donations
  • In return, children send a handwritten letter or drawing to the Abuelo Solidario

Anonymity is maintained between donors and recipients, ensuring dignity and privacy for all involved.

Those wishing to participate can do so with a minimum donation of €20. Contributions can also be combined among several people if preferred. Donations will remain open until January, shortly before the arrival of the Three Kings.

Christmas Solidarity Through Sport

Several municipal departments have joined the initiative by dedicating funds raised from sporting events throughout December to Mi Abuelo Solidario. These include:

  • Adeje Kids Futsal Day
    13 December – Fañabé Sports Hall, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • 8-a-side Football Match (Adeje Sports Department vs Tenerife Top Training)
    18 December – Las Torres Sports Hall, 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • Solidarity Chess Tournament
    20 December – Hotel Barceló Corales La Caleta, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • PSC Solidarity Basketball Tournament
    23 December – Tijoco Bajo Sports Hall, 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Solidarity Youth Football Tournament
26–27 December – Armeñime Municipal Football Field
    Friday: 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. / Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Youth and Family Support Initiatives

The Department of Youth is also contributing with the “Espacio Joven Cup”, a 3×3 solidarity basketball tournament taking place on 27 December at La Caleta Sports Hall. The event will include male and female categories, ranging from pre-mini (ages 9–10) to senior (20+). Teams must include at least two registered residents of Adeje, with a registration fee of €10 per player.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Services will provide additional support to families already receiving assistance through the Children and Family Department. During the Christmas holidays, children will be offered a day camp from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., allowing parents to continue working while their children are safely cared for during the festive period.

“Mi Abuelo Solidario” once again highlights the strength of community spirit in Adeje, ensuring that solidarity, care and joy remain at the heart of Christmas for every child.
