Recent research has revealed that ancient viral DNA sequences are vital for the development of human embryos. Far from being inert “junk DNA,” these remnants of retroviruses, which make up nearly 8–9% of the human genome, have been co-opted by evolution to perform crucial functions.
What the study found
Scientists focused on a viral family known as HERVK LTR5Hs, which becomes active in the earliest stages of human embryogenesis. Using stem-cell based embryo models (called blastoids), they discovered that when these viral elements were removed or disabled, the models failed to organize or develop correctly.
This demonstrates that some viral DNA sequences, once invaders, are now indispensable regulators of gene activity during the first days of life.
